Heritage
A house, in its own words
Franck Boclet established himself in the Paris fashion scene before turning his creative attention to perfumery. According to fragrance distribution timelines documented on Fragrantica, his first fragrance entries appeared in 2013, with OUD marking his debut into the niche fragrance market. A Parisian designer by practice, Boclet brought his background in fashion design to fragrance creation, reportedly seeking to ensure that the fragrances could stand alongside his clothing collections as expressions of the same artistic vision. Many fragrance commentators have noted that Boclet functions as both fashion designer and perfumer, a dual role that remains relatively uncommon in the niche fragrance world. His earlier fashion work laid groundwork for the dramatic, statement-making aesthetic that would characterize his fragrance line, particularly in collections like Rock The Kasbah, which drew directly from his Rock & Riot fashion concept. As the brand developed through the mid-2010s, it accumulated a following among collectors who appreciated fragrances like Tobacco and Ashes for their bold, atmospheric qualities. The brand has remained relatively private about its internal history, with public-facing storytelling focused primarily on the fragrances themselves rather than corporate milestones. Boclet has spoken about his intention to create fragrances with strong personality and exceptional character. This stated commitment manifests across the collection in scents that refuse subtlety as a governing principle. Rather than pursuing mass-appeal compositions designed to offend no one, the brand constructs fragrances meant to make a clear statement, from the smoky intensity of Tobacco to the animalic depth of Ashes. The collections frequently carry thematic titles that suggest narratives, with Rock The Kasbah evoking North African musical traditions and rock influence, while later releases like Madness in 2024 continue this pattern of themed scent creation. Fashion commentators and fragrance reviewers have characterized the brand as having an unconventional approach to gender in scent, creating what some have described as masculine-leaning fragrances while embracing a broader spectrum of expression. The Rock & Riot concept that informed several collections appears designed to challenge boundaries rather than reinforce established conventions. Boclet's self-described positioning as the only artistic director in fashion to create niche fragrances indicates a deliberate choice to remain independent from the typical division between fashion houses and dedicated perfumers, treating both disciplines as extensions of a single creative practice.
