The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Franck Boclet launched Tobacco in 2014 with perfumer Drom. From the outset, the fragrance was built around tobacco as a bold, aromatic anchor rather than a background accent. Plum and ginger were chosen to give the opening immediacy and a slight fruity brightness, avoiding the heavy linearity that often plagues tobacco-first compositions. The brand's preference for assertive, structured work is evident in how the tobacco never softens or becomes purely sweet.
The note selection reflects a deliberate philosophy: tobacco as the core, supported by a progression from fruity brightness through spicy warmth to resinous comfort. Pairing clove with tonka bean was a strategic choice to make the heart feel almost edible, while the smoke and vetiver keep the composition from becoming overly sweet. The drydown's amber and musk ensure longevity without resorting to heavyoud oroud-based shortcuts.
The evolution
The fragrance begins with an aromatic punch where tobacco meets plum and ginger in quick succession. As the top notes settle, clove takes center stage, introducing a warm spice that contrasts with the tobacco's natural depth. Tonka bean adds a honeyed sweetness that plays against the clove's bite, while cedarwood provides dry structure and smoke adds an almost tangential edge. By the final phase, vanilla and benzoin dominate, creating a resinous, warm finish that feels both grounding and lingering. Vetiver and amber extend the drydown, giving the skin a complex, warm trail for hours after application.
Cultural impact
The 2014 release of Tobacco arrived when sweet-tobacco compositions had been gaining traction. Franck Boclet's entry through Drom created a warm-spicy construction. The prominent clove presence brought a particular character to the composition, creating depth that extended beyond straightforward sweetness. On first application, aromatic tobacco leaf dominates, settling into a rich blend of spices and resins that evolve across the wearer. The fragrance maintains its structured character throughout, with the warm-spicy accord holding firm as it develops, and the composition remains assertive and long-lasting on the skin.
