The beginning
In 2008, Norbert Bijaoui approached the 1881 line with a clear intention: intensify without coarsening. The original 1881 Pour Homme had always been about restrained masculine elegance, that effortless blend of freedom and sophistication the house was known for. The Intense version didn't push harder; it deepened. It took the green, fresh aromatic structure and layered in more resin, more leather, more of the woods that ground a fragrance without weighing it down. The result was a scent that felt familiar to anyone who knew the original but offered something richer underneath, the same architectural confidence, now with warmer foundations.
What makes this work is how Bijaoui handled the intensification. Rather than simply amping the bergamot or adding heavier woods, he extended each stage of the pyramid. The opening holds its green character longer before transitioning into the conifer heart, which now sustains rather than arrives and departs. The base gains leather and sandalwood presence without sacrificing the oakmoss that gives it that signature Cerruti powdery quality. This is refinement applied systematically, not a louder version of the same idea.
The evolution
On skin, the opening hits first, bergamot and basil bright and immediate, that green sharpness that announces the walk is beginning. Fifteen minutes in, the conifer heart takes over: cypress and pine with a resinous body from the fir that gives it substance without weight. This middle section lasts, 2 to 3 hours of aromatic calm before the leather and sandalwood start their slow reveal. The oakmoss does its quiet work throughout, keeping everything grounded in that powdery Cerruti signature. By hour 4 or 5, you're left with a soft wood-and-musk trail that stays close but persists. Moderate sillage throughout, this isn't a fragrance that fills a room. It's one that leaves a trace when you've already passed through it.
