The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
In 2006, Michel Girard created 1881 Black as a darker companion to Cerruti's original 1881. The fragrance opens with the same crisp citrus and aromatic herbs that defined its predecessor, but here the composition takes a different turn. The bitter orange and lavender remain, though they feel more subdued, wrapped in a richer foundation. As the top notes fade, deeper elements emerge: resinous woods, darker florals that add weight without heaviness. The drydown reveals the true character: warm, intimate, with a subtle sweetness that lingers close to the skin. Where the original 1881 reads as daytime elegance, Black offers something for the evening hours, maintaining the same clean lines but with added depth and warmth.
The marzipan-oud combination in the base is the structural surprise. Marzipan, sweet, almond, almost edible, might seem like it belongs in a dessert fragrance. Oud, dark, resinous, animalic, belongs in something more confrontational. Together they create a base that is sweet without being soft, dark without being heavy. The guaiac wood bridges them: its smoky, slightly medicinal quality keeps the sweetness grounded. This is a base that rewards patience. The top notes arrive clean and familiar. The heart adds warmth. But the marzipan-oud is what lingers, and it lingers because it earns it.
The evolution
The opening announces itself clearly: bitter orange, lavender, pepper. Clean, aromatic, with the citrus cutting sharp against the herbal depth. This is the familiar phase, the part that reads as classic masculine. The heart arrives within twenty minutes, and with it the cedar. Nutmeg adds warmth underneath, caraway brings an unexpected aromatic twist that rounds the composition into something more complex. But the real story is the base. Marzipan emerges first, its sweet almond character arriving as a surprise. Then the oud settles in, not loud, but present. Dark, resinous, slightly animalic. Guaiac wood provides the structure: smoky, woody, with a hint of medicine that keeps the sweetness from becoming cloying. The drydown stays close and intimate rather than projecting. This is a fragrance that doesn't announce itself. It waits for you to notice.
Cultural impact
1881 Black arrived in 2006, marking a darker, more intimate direction for Cerruti. With oud woven into its foundation, the fragrance speaks to those hours when the formal day gives way to something richer, something more personal. It's a scent for evening occasions, for moments when you want to leave a lasting impression without overwhelming the room. The combination of classic structure with this darker note creates something that feels both established and fresh.
