The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The 2012 Serie Limitee marked a collector's moment for the house: 10,000 copies of Cerruti 1881, packaged in a watercolor illustration of a suited silhouette, fashion and fragrance in dialogue. Martin Gras composed this edition as an aromatic fougère rooted in Italian landscape, drawing from the same Mediterranean vocabulary as the 1990 original: pine, cypress, juniper. The limited run offered more than scent, it offered belonging to something finite. Each box contained a chance to win one of five Cerruti suits or 500 ties, making each purchase an entry to win, fragrance as an invitation to participate. The watercolor packaging itself became a collectible artifact, blurring the line between fragrance and fashion object.
The composition stands apart through its heart. Ylang-ylang appears prominently here, a move toward softness that works because the evergreen architecture holds firm. Juniper and cypress open sharp and cool, the galbanum adds an herbaceous green depth that prevents the citrus from lifting off, and the pine base anchors everything with Mediterranean clarity. The result is a fragrance that smells like standing in a grove, not walking through a department store. The ylang-ylang unfolds gradually, its creamy, tropical sweetness balancing the sharper green notes without overwhelming them.
The evolution
The opening announces itself immediately, juniper, bergamot, cypress in rapid succession. Cool. Crisp. The kind of air that makes you breathe deeper. Within minutes, lavender and basil join, adding an herbal backbone that keeps the citrus from becoming fleeting. The heart arrives quietly. Ylang-ylang emerges first, then rose, soft, almost intimate against the green structure. Some find this transition jarring; others find it the whole point. The drydown belongs to the evergreens. Pine, sandalwood, patchouli settle close to the skin, warm and intimate, lasting for hours after the top notes have dissolved.
Cultural impact
The 2012 Serie Limitee occupies a particular niche: a collector's objet for those who appreciate the 1881 lineage without seeking the original. Its evergreen character and aromatic fougère structure define its character. The edition's packaging and limited availability made it a sought-after piece among collectors. The fragrance itself carries the DNA of the original 1881 while offering something distinct, a refined aromatic experience that stands apart from the flagship scent.
