Why it exists.
The beginning
Maître Jardinier joined Extrait D'Atelier's lineup in 2019, a perfume named for the master gardener. The gardener earned a green spine of pine needles, bay leaf, and balsam fir, a citrus top that opens cool and sharp before the warmer wood elements settle in. Bertrand Duchaufour is the perfumer behind it. The composition reads as an exercise in green aromatics: coniferous, herbal, and lifted by citrus rather than weighed down by it. Each note pulls its weight. The juniper lends a peppery snap to the opening. The bay leaf introduces a camphorated coolness through the heart. The balsam fir anchors the base with a resinous warmth that keeps the green character intact long after the citrus fades.
Maître Jardinier skips galbanum and fig leaf entirely. Instead it builds the green architecture from juniper berries, pine needles, and bay leaf, which gives the composition a coniferous backbone with a slightly medicinal edge. The juniper opens with a bright, gin-like clarity. The pine needles add a dry, resinous quality that threads through the heart. The bay leaf contributes an herbal sharpness that prevents the green from becoming too sweet or too dense. The balsam fir in the base keeps the green character alive long after the citrus fades.
The evolution
The opening belongs to the oranges. Bergamot, mandarin, sweet orange, and lemon arrive in quick succession, bright and a little sharp, layered over juniper that gives the opening a peppery clarity. As the citrus softens into something rounder, almost marmalade-adjacent, the bay leaf starts pushing through with a camphorated edge that signals the shift. The heart is where the green gets serious. Pine needles and peony sit in an unlikely conversation: one resinous and sharp, the other dewy and slightly creamy. The combo reads differently depending on the wearer: herbal on some skin, floral-tinged on others. After the heart opens, cedarwood and frankincense settle into a dry, slightly smoky base warmed by amber and held together by a quiet musk. The fir balsam is the material that outlives everything else, lingering on fabric with a clean, sawdust-like sweetness.
