    Master Perfumer

    Norbert Bijaoui

Norbert Bijaoui arrived at Jean Patou in 1997 with a clear objective: to compose. He had spent his early years as a fragrance evaluator, studying the compositions carefully before making his move into creation. Within two years, he delivered Tiempe Passate for Antonia's Flowers, a fragrance that The New York Times later cited alongside work by Jacques Chabert as examples of masters at the top of their craft. He joined MANE in 2004 at 24 years old and has remained there ever since, building a body of work that spans decades and houses. His tenure at the French fragrance house produced pieces like Classic Chypre, Sonata Flower, and Organza Indécence. He later served as president of the Société Française des Parfumeurs, and in 2012 received the International Perfumer-Creator Award. His daughter Mathilde Bijaoui now works as a perfumer at the same house, carrying the family name forward into a new generation. Bijaoui remains one of the more respected voices in French perfumery, known for work that prioritizes structure and longevity over trend-chasing.

    How Norbert composes

Bijaoui favors architectural clarity. His compositions tend to unfold with precision, each layer doing its work before the next arrives. He returns frequently to chypre structures, where labdanum and oakmoss anchor the heart, and he handles citrus as a serious material rather than window dressing. Fureur d'Agrumes demonstrates this lean: bergamot and grapefruit pressed into service as framework rather than garnish. He has shown comfort across florals, orientals, and fresh bases, with an evident preference for natural materials when formulas allow. His work for Cerruti 1881 and Bogart shows a man equally at home in designer and luxury contexts, adapting voice without losing identity.

    Philosophy

    What drives Norbert

Bijaoui approaches each brief as a problem to solve rather than a canvas to fill. He has spoken about the importance of listening to what a fragrance needs before imposing an idea upon it. His work reflects a respect for classical perfumery foundations while remaining open to modern constraints and realities. He does not chase novelty for its own sake. Instead, he builds fragrances that make sense internally, where every element serves the whole. His philosophy centers on craft over spectacle, on perfumery as a discipline rather than a performance.
