The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Nocturnal Poetry arrived in 2020. The opening serves as the first frame, coffee, violet leaf, turmeric, before the florals take over and the real work begins. Coffee absolute opens with a sharp, slightly bitter edge that feels almost medicinal, cutting through the air before the greener notes of violet leaf absolute emerge to soften it. The turmeric adds an earthy, almost dusty quality that bridges the transition into the floral heart. Jasmine absolute and damask rose absolute arrive together, their petals softened by leather and cumin, warmed by oud. The transition is smooth, with no jarring hand-offs as the florals settle into their full complexity.
The animalic layer is not incidental. Civet, hyraceum, and castoreum are front-facing materials, and the composition doesn't soften them, it contextualizes them. Beeswax absolute and hay absolute push warmth into the base, creating a drydown that reads as honeyed rather than harsh. The animalic notes pulse beneath the wax, giving the composition a living quality, as if the scent is breathing. The civet brings a sharp, almost metallic edge that balances the sweetness of the beeswax, while the hyraceum adds a animalic depth that feels ancient and primal.
The evolution
The opening is brief but intentional. Coffee absolute, violet leaf absolute, and turmeric arrive together, a sharp, slightly medicinal burst that clears the way for what follows. Within minutes, jasmine absolute, damask rose absolute, and champaca take over, their petals softened by leather and cumin, warmed by oud. The transition is smooth. No jarring hand-offs. The heart moves in lockstep with florals and animalic materials. The drydown is where this fragrance lives. Beeswax absolute and hay absolute form the structural warmth, but the animalic materials, civet, hyraceum, castoreum, are the ones that stay. They don't disappear. They deepen, settling into the composition like a foundation rather than a flourish. Beeswax, hay, and that particular warmth that reads as animalic without being aggressive.
Cultural impact
Nocturnal Poetry arrived in 2020. The fragrance treats animalic materials as structural rather than decorative elements. Civet, hyraceum, and castoreum form the backbone of the composition, giving it a raw, uncompromising quality that sets it apart from more conventional approaches. The animalic layer is front-facing, woven into the structure of the scent rather than appearing as accents. Beeswax absolute and hay absolute provide warmth, creating a drydown that reads as honeyed rather than harsh. The composition operates on its own terms, presenting a committed exploration of animalic themes.
