The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Ahuizotl takes its name from Aztec mythology, a creature that dwells at the bottom of lakes, part fish, part mammal, watching. Prin Lomros built this fragrance around that image: something aquatic and ancient, pulled from depths. The 2022 release translates that mythological weight into scent, using mushroom absolute as the anchor, an unusual choice that signals intent from the first sketch.
What makes Ahuizotl interesting is the combination of materials that don't obviously belong together. Mushroom absolute is rare, it requires specific cultivation and extraction methods, and it's not a forgiving ingredient. Ambergris brings salt and warmth, an animalic note that develops differently on every skin. Choya Nakh, a traditional material made from shells and ambergris, adds a marine, almost tidal quality to the earthiness. The result is a fragrance that is simultaneously dark and breathing, grounded and aquatic.
The evolution
The opening hits bright and metallic, aldehydes and bitter orange arrive first, catching the light before the herbs take over. Clary sage, artemisia, and galbanum introduce a cool, medicinal clarity. Violet leaf absolute adds a green, almost cucumber-like freshness that cuts through the darkness. This phase lasts about 30 minutes before the heart deepens. The heart unfolds slowly. Leather and black tea emerge alongside the mushroom, creating a dry, slightly smoky complexity. Immortelle adds a honeyed, slightly bitter warmth. Cedarwood and geranium introduce a quiet woodiness. Blackcurrant brings a faint berry tartness that you almost don't notice until it's gone. This is where Ahuizotl earns its patience, the heart is different on every wearing. The drydown is where this fragrance lives. Mushroom absolute takes over with an earthy, truffle-like depth that feels ancient and alive. Ambergris adds salt and warmth without sweetness. Patchouli and leather create a dry, woody base that lingers for hours. Tonka bean softens the edges.
Cultural impact
Ahuizotl occupies a specific corner of niche perfumery, complex, demanding, and quietly confident. The discontinued production status has made it harder to find, but wearers who tracked it down describe it as a fragrance that stays with you. Not through projection, but through depth. It asks something of the wearer, patience, attention, a willingness to sit with complexity, and rewards that patience with a drydown that few mainstream fragrances can match.
