Rattikarn, รัตติกาล, is a 2023 composition from Prin, and it sets out to capture a particular hour through scent alone. The Thai oud anchoring the blend carries a weight that ties the fragrance to its regional materials, grounding the composition with something warm and ancient. Around it, a globally sourced list of raw materials unfolds in layers that shift as the hours pass. The smoke from lapsang souchong tea arrives first, sharp and confident, before camphor and cumin lend a cooler, spiced edge to the opening. Rattikarn belongs to a body of work that places storytelling and selective production at the center of its practice, each release arriving as a self-contained piece rather than part of a broader commercial catalog.
What makes Rattikarn unusual is its heart-note architecture. Rather than building a traditional spicy-floral core, the composition pulls from materials more often found in resinous traditions. Immortelle brings its maple-syrup dark sweetness against the green bite of galbanum, while osmanthus and lotus absolutes add apricot-leather facets that read almost edible. Deer musk and Thai oud anchor everything in something ancient and warm, giving the blend a carnal edge that the florals alone would never produce.
The evolution
The first ten minutes are all smoke, almost aggressively so. Lapsang souchong and camphor hit the skin like the air after something burned beautifully. Cumin and caraway warm underneath, shifting the smoke from fireplace to kitchen. By the thirty-minute mark, immortelle starts pulling the composition toward its maple-tinged sweetness, and galbanum adds a sharp green vein that cuts the richness before it overwhelms. Around two hours in, the florals arrive properly, osmanthus and lotus absolute giving the drydown an apricot-skin quality that's unexpectedly tender after all that smoke. The base settles into deer musk and Thai oud, warm and close, the kind of scent that clings to a sweater the next morning. Longevity runs a full workday and into the evening, with moderate sillage that keeps it intimate rather than theatrical.
