The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Merit arrived in 2022 from Nilafar du Nil, created by perfumer AbdelFattah Nassar. Coconut and tobacco form the fragrance's central argument, with suede providing a soft, tactile quality. The composition balances sweet and grounded elements, creating something warm and present. It's a scent that holds attention through its confident presence rather than loud declaration.
Merit moves beyond what the sweet-oriental category typically offers. Oakmoss and patchouli thread through the heart of the composition, keeping the sweetness honest rather than overwhelming. The tolu balsam and elemi resin add a sticky, resinous middle layer that gives the fragrance real substance. It's a composition built with layers that reveal themselves over time rather than a straightforward progression from first spray to fade.
The evolution
The opening introduces coconut cream, almond, and neroli's bright orange-blossom lift. Tobacco leaf arrives alongside black pepper adding spice. The heart develops with mimosa and frangipani, warm rather than bright, with suede's texture and tolu balsam's sticky sweetness. The base settles into cedar and musk, with violet leaf's green freshness and vanilla's warmth. Oakmoss ties the composition together at the close.
Cultural impact
Merit appeals to those seeking sweet-oriental presence without the usual concessions. The coconut-tobacco pairing stands out in its category as a distinctive combination. Some have noted its projection as particularly notable for a fragrance in this style. It's a scent that draws comments from those nearby.
