The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Sweet Like Candy arrived in 2016 as Ariana Grande's third fragrance, following Ari and the Frankie unisex edition. The fragrance leaned into indulgence, with berries, cream, vanilla, and a playful femininity that matched exactly what the name promised. The scent opens bright and jammy, bursting with blackberry and pear softened by bergamot, then settles into a creamy heart where jasmine and honeysuckle wrap around a whipped cream accord. The drydown brings warmth as vanilla and cashmere wood arrive to ground everything, creating a sweetness that feels intimate rather than overpowering. The standard bottle kept the signature pom-pom, this time in soft matte pink, a visual promise the scent delivered on.
The composition lives in a specific sweet spot: lactonic and gourmand without being a one-note sugar bomb. The bergamot in the opening gives just enough citrus brightness to keep the blackberry from cloying, a brief clear moment before the florals take over. The whipped cream and marshmallow heart notes are technically challenging because they need to smell fluffy without tipping into powdered detergent. The cashmere wood in the base is doing quiet structural work: it adds warmth and creaminess without the heaviness of sandalwood, letting the vanilla stay prominent but not sticky. It's a well-balanced pyramid for its target audience, sweet enough to satisfy, structured enough to evolve over hours.
The evolution
The opening hits fast, a jammy blackberry and pear burst bright with bergamot, arriving in under a minute. Within fifteen minutes the florals begin to surface, jasmine first, then honeysuckle threading through a whipped cream accord that softens the berry sweetness. The heart is creamy and warm, uncomplicated in the best way. The drydown is where Sweet Like Candy earns its keep, as vanilla and cashmere wood arrive to ground everything. The sweetness dials back to something skin-like, warm, intimate. Moderate sillage throughout, projecting close rather than announcing itself across a room. The longevity holds well across the wear, with the fragrance remaining noticeable for several hours as it evolves from opening through drydown.
Cultural impact
Sweet Like Candy won Fragrance of the Year, Women's Popular from the Fragrance Foundation in 2017, a significant recognition for a line barely two years old. The award highlighted the fragrance's appeal and the success of Ariana Grande's growing perfume collection. The win underscored the commercial potential of celebrity fragrance lines and their ability to resonate with a broad audience through scents that carry personal meaning and brand identity.
