The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Unas takes its name from the last pharaoh of Egypt's Fifth Dynasty, a ruler whose pyramid at Saqqara contains the oldest known religious texts. The house wanted a fragrance that carried that weight: ancient, layered, something that rewards attention. The brief was warmth without sweetness overload, spice that didn't overwhelm, and a drydown that felt like it had been here before. What emerged is a composition that opens sharp with cinnamon and bergamot, settles into a heart of roasted pumpkin and tobacco, and lands in suede and benzoin. Not nostalgia. Memory.
The roasted pumpkin is the unusual note, it sits between Gourmand and Oriental, pulling from the kitchen but refusing to smell edible. Here it bridges the sharp opening and the warm base, threading cinnamon's heat through tobacco and almond. The rose doesn't flower softly; it arrives muted, almost smoky, supporting the spice rather than softening it. The suede in the base is the tell, it keeps the sweetness from floating, anchors everything to skin rather than air.
The evolution
Cinnamon arrives first, sharp, almost aggressive. Bergamot softens the edge within seconds, bringing brief citrus brightness before the rose emerges smoky and grounded. The heart unfolds over the next two hours: roasted pumpkin introduces itself as something warm and almost sweet, quickly joined by tobacco that deepens the composition. Nutmeg and almond settle in, creating an amaretto-like warmth without being overtly sweet. Patchouli and benzoin take over in the base, with suede emerging as the fragrance's most distinctive feature, staying close to skin and becoming the lingering signature over six to eight hours.
Cultural impact
Within Nilafar du Nil's catalog, Unas occupies a specific niche: warm Oriental with an unusual Gourmand edge. The roasted pumpkin note sets it apart from the house's more classically Egyptian offerings, modern in approach while maintaining the depth the house is known for. Since its 2021 launch, it's found its audience among those who want something warmer and closer to skin than the typical powerhouse release.
