Why it exists.
The beginning
Mahogany released Água Intensa Gálbano & Olíbano in 2024 as part of their Água Intensa line, a series built around water as a starting point rather than a finishing flourish. The name tells you exactly what you're getting: galbanum, that sharp green resin with the slightly bitter edge, and olíbano, frankincense, the resin that has traveled incense routes for thousands of years. The tension between them is the whole point. One is cool, leafy, almost biting. The other is warm, dry, devotional. Galbanum carries an almost metallic bitterness, the kind of green that feels torn from the stem seconds ago, while olíbano settles in slowly with its lemony, pine-adjacent haze. Side by side they create a push and pull that keeps each note from settling into a single register.
Galbanum and frankincense share a resinous lineage, but they rarely meet on equal footing. One is a green burst, the other a slow burn. What makes this composition interesting is the layered bridge between them: buchu, lily of the valley, cardamom, and ginger acting as translators. Buchu brings its own leafy, slightly medicinal sharpness, with that distinctive blackcurrant-leaf character that perfumery recognizes as its signature. Cardamom adds a cool spiced lift that brightens the resins without sweetening them.
The evolution
The first 20 minutes are the coldest point. Bergamot, peppermint, and a thread of lavender hit bright and clean, like a window thrown open in a warm room. The peppermint sharpens the bergamot's citrus peel into something almost icy, while the lavender holds it all together with that familiar cool, herbal sweetness that reads as clean without feeling soapy. Then seaweed does something unexpected, pulling the composition toward the coast without making it aquatic in a synthetic way. The galbanum arrives next, sharp and vegetal, cutting through the softer florals underneath with its bitter green snap. Lily of the valley and rose keep it from feeling austere, lending a dewy sweetness that softens the edges without dulling them. As the first hour passes, the seaweed fades but never fully disappears, leaving behind a faint saltiness that lingers under the greens.

Água Intensa Gálbano & Olíbano sits in an unusual space within the green-resinous category. Its marine-green profile feels specific and intentional, the kind of scent that reads as a confident, deliberate choice rather than something designed to appeal broadly. The galbanum in the composition is treated with care, allowed to express its full bitter, leafy character without being buried under sweeter florals or muted by heavy bases. The frankincense grounds the formula with its warm, dry, resinous presence, giving the greens something to settle into over time.
