The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Menta & Alecrim arrives from Granado in 2019 as the house distills its apothecary heritage into something immediate and wearable. Mint and rosemary, the herbs that have always grown in the Teresópolis farm, take center stage. Not as a nostalgic gesture. As a statement. The Brazilian brand, founded in Rio de Janeiro in 1870, built its name on natural remedies drawn from local flora. This fragrance is that philosophy at its most direct: herbs you can identify, herbs you can picture growing, herbs that smell like the source material rather than a synthetic approximation. It is Granado saying: we know our botanicals, and here they are, unadorned.
What makes Menta & Alecrim interesting is the star anise. It doesn't announce itself. It works underneath, adding a faint aniseed warmth that keeps the mint from reading as purely medicinal. Without it, the composition would be a straightforward mint-rosemary herbal, pleasant, but forgettable. With it, the fragrance gains a quiet complexity. The star anise acts as a bridge between the cool mint and the warmer herbaceous rosemary, making the transition feel intentional rather than accidental. It is a perfumer's trick: the note you don't notice is the one holding everything together.
The evolution
The opening hits fast, bergamot and green notes arriving bright and citrusy, a sudden hit of morning air. The mint follows within minutes, sharp and almost crystalline. It coats the nostrils the way chewing fresh mint leaves does, that mentholated coolness that makes you breathe in sharply. This is the peak of the fragrance's intensity. By the 30-minute mark, rosemary takes over as the dominant note, not the delicate kitchen rosemary, but something with more camphor, more apothecary character. The mint doesn't disappear but it recedes, making room for the herb to lead. Star anise threads through as an unexpected middle voice, its faint licorice warmth keeping the composition from feeling purely medicinal. Around the 2-hour mark, the base arrives. Amber introduces a subtle warmth that softens everything, cypress adds a woody, slightly coniferous quality, and musk settles close to the skin, present but restrained, more texture than statement.
Cultural impact
Menta & Alecrim occupies a specific niche, the everyday Brazilian fragrance for people who want freshness without the usual masculine aquatic or citrus structures. It performs well in heat, appeals to wearers seeking energizing daytime scents, and has found a loyal following among those who appreciate its natural, non-synthetic herbal profile. The 230ml bottle format and moderate pricing have made it a practical choice in the Brazilian market, where it competes with both local pharmacy brands and international releases.
