The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Granado released Mandarina & Sândalo in 2019 under perfumer Clement Gavarry. The name says everything, two notes, no pretense. This is Brazilian straightforwardness applied to fragrance. Mandarina anchors the scent in Brazilian citrus territory. Sândalo, written in Portuguese, keeps it grounded in place. The pairing is deliberate: the bright, immediate hit of mandarin against the slow, intimate warmth of sandalwood. Gavarry structured the fragrance to move between these poles rather than settling in one. The citrus opens crisp and sparkling, an effervescent wave that hits quickly before softening. The sandalwood follows, providing a creamy, woodsy counterpoint that deepens the overall composition.
The heart of gardenia and jasmine does the heavy lifting here. Gardenia brings a creamy, almost buttery quality that softens what could be a sharp citrus opening. Jasmine adds depth, not indolic excess, but a warm, slightly sweet presence that connects the bright top to the woody base. Freesia threads through as powder, the kind of note that bridges sections without demanding attention. The three florals work as a transition team, moving the wearer from tart to warm without announcing the handoff. It's a compositional choice that requires restraint, letting each note do its job without overreach. The sandalwood base rewards this patience, arriving smooth and creamy rather than abrupt.
The evolution
The mandarin arrives first, bright, tart, immediate. Bergamot sharpens the citrus without sweetening it. For the first fifteen minutes, this is an awake fragrance. Then the florals begin their slow takeover. Gardenia emerges first, its creamy quality already softening the edges. Freesia adds powdery texture. Jasmine deepens the heart into something warmer, heavier. The citrus does not disappear, it retreats, becoming a background brightness rather than the main event. By the third hour, sandalwood has taken over. Amber adds sweetness without sugar. Musk brings intimacy, the smell of skin-warmth. The drydown stays close, a quiet presence that lingers near the wearer. The next morning, faint sandalwood remains on pulse points, warm, quiet, still present.
Cultural impact
Mandarina & Sândalo arrived in 2019 as part of Granado's approach to extending their apothecary heritage into contemporary fragrance. The brand built its identity around pharmaceutical-quality perfumes, and this release reflects their commitment to blending traditional craftsmanship with contemporary taste. The mandarin-sandalwood pairing combines bright citrus with creamy wood, creating a fragrance that feels both immediate and intimate. The composition leans into familiar, approachable materials rather than rare or exotic ingredients, keeping the scent accessible while still sophisticated.
