The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Granado traces its roots to 1870 Rio de Janeiro, where it began as a pharmacy dedicated to botanical remedies and apothecary craft. That Brazilian apothecary tradition still shapes every composition the house releases, including Époque Tropical, launched in 2021 under perfumer Guillaume Flavigny. Rather than rehashing the brand's botanical heritage in a literal way, Flavigny translated Granado's pharmacy sensibility into something more overtly tropical and escapist.
The note structure reflects a deliberate philosophy: tropical does not mean sweet or aquatic. Instead, Granado chose ingredients that evoke warmth and abundance through nuttiness, wood, and cream rather than through the usual coconut or marine shortcuts. The pairing of cashew nut with mandarin orange feels distinctly Brazilian in spirit, referencing the country's nut production while keeping the composition accessible. The floral heart borrows from classical perfumery, grounding the tropical opening in something more timeless.
The evolution
The journey begins with Mandarin Orange and Cashew Nut, a pairing that sounds unusual on paper but works because the nuttiness grounds the citrus without sweetening it. Cardamom adds a slight spice that keeps the opening from reading as simple. As the fragrance progresses, Geranium and Magnolia take over, with rose appearing as a quiet supporting note rather than a dominant force. The drydown shifts to Guaiac Wood and Sandalwood, two woods that have good overlap with Brazilian botanical territory while delivering the warmth expected from a tropical-themed release. Tonka Bean rounds the base with a soft, vanillic sweetness that prevents the woods from reading as austere.
Cultural impact
Since its 2021 debut, Époque Tropical has earned a loyal following among fragrance wearers who gravitate toward tropical florals with woody warmth. The powdery rose-magnolia heart and the unexpected cashew note generate consistent discussion among those discovering the brand for the first time.
