The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Granado's roots in Rio de Janeiro date to 1870, when the pharmacy first opened its doors and began sourcing botanicals from local farmers. The brand's Teresópolis farm, where rosemary, lavender, and native citrus flourish alongside cultivated specimens, serves as the living library for the Vintage collection introduced in 2025. Perfumer Ilias Ermenidis approached Amazônico as an opportunity to distill Brazil's botanical identity into something universally appealing, working with ingredients sourced from this family farm to ensure transparency and traceability in every bottle.
The note philosophy behind Amazônico prioritizes contrast over consensus. Raspberry and orange provide immediate accessibility, while frankincense adds intrigue. The heart's cocoa-mate combination creates a uniquely South American signature that avoids generic gourmand territory. By closing with sandalwood, tonka bean, and patchouli, the fragrance achieves longevity without resorting to heavy musks or synthetic woods. Each ingredient serves a purpose: the opening attracts, the heart engages, the drydown endures. This layering approach reflects Granado's apothecary heritage, where formulations balance efficacy with sensory pleasure.
The evolution
The fragrance begins with a deliberate citrus-fruity brightness that speaks to Brazil's abundant orange groves and wild raspberries. Ermenidis introduces frankincense early, using the resin to add depth and a touch of the sacred, reflecting the spiritual importance of botanicals in Brazilian folk traditions. As the top notes soften, cocoa takes command of the heart, nodding to Brazil's status as the world's largest cocoa producer. Mate brings an herbal dimension that evokes mate tea, a daily ritual for millions across the country. The drydown settles into a warm embrace of sandalwood and tonka bean, with patchouli providing the earthy counterweight that prevents the finale from becoming overly sweet. This evolution tells a story of Brazilian landscape: bright, abundant, then richly grounded.
Cultural impact
Amazônico launches in 2025 as part of Granado's Vintage collection, a line that includes recent releases like Fervo Intenso (2024) and classic reinterpretations like Imperial (2020). The collection celebrates the rich biodiversity of the Amazon through fragrances that embody the tropical soul of Brazil, exuberant, colorful, and mysterious.
