The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Folhas de Figo e Violeta translates to Leaves of Fig and Violet, and the name does the work. Mahogany's 2021 release is a study in green, built around the cool snap of fig leaf rather than the fruit's sweetness. Ashley Balavoine composed it as a meditation on garden air, the kind of scent that clings to your hands after pulling leaves. The violet and rose quiet the herbs, giving the composition a powdery undercurrent that keeps the greens from ever feeling sharp or aggressive. The opening leans cool and vegetal, with fig leaf and petitgrain stacking into something almost mineral, a little bitter at the edges. Italian lemon brightens that first impression without tipping into anything sweet.
What makes this composition work is the tension between aromatic herbs and the softer floral-and-powder layer. Basil and nutmeg bring clean heat, while violet and rose cool everything down. The fig leaf does the heavy lifting up top, giving the whole structure a green lactonic quality that's more about leaves than fruit. White musk and oakmoss underneath make it feel rooted, like the scent actually came from a garden rather than a lab bench. The petitgrain adds a bitter citrus edge that sharpens the opening before the florals settle in.
The evolution
The first ten minutes are all fig leaf and Italian lemon, with petitgrain adding a bitter green edge that makes the opening feel crisp and slightly mineral. It reads almost like crushed leaves between your fingers, cool and vegetal. The lemon fades within twenty minutes, and the basil arrives with its clean herbal snap, joined by violet and rose that dust everything in soft powder. The nutmeg warms the heart, giving the green notes a spicy undertone that keeps them from feeling cold. As the hours accumulate, the composition shifts into its base layer. White musk takes over, carrying vetiver and oakmoss underneath, with amber warming the drydown from below. The green notes don't disappear. They soften, settle into the skin, and the whole thing reads warmer and more intimate by hour four.
Cultural impact
Folhas de Figo e Violeta is a green composition, and it wears that identity proudly without softening the edges to make itself more approachable. The fig leaf and violet interplay is the central conversation, and the scent holds true to it from first spray through the later hours. The fragrance appeals to wearers who want something rooted and personal rather than engineered for maximum broad appeal. Community ratings lean heavily positive, with strong spring and summer wear patterns: spring at 65 and summer at 57, both well above the colder months, which suggests the green and slightly powdery profile maps onto warmer-weather moods.
