The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Max Gavarry created Divas in 2000 as a continuation of the house's bold feminine tradition. The fragrance opens with bright citrus and tropical fruit notes that feel immediately inviting, setting the stage for the florals that follow. Peony and orchid bloom in the heart, rich and velvety, their sweetness balanced by deeper base notes. There's a warmth here that feels intentional, a confident drawl rather than a whisper. The composition doesn't apologize for its presence, it announces itself and settles in comfortably. That's the signature of Divas: confidence, warmth, and a certain fearlessness in how it wears.
The chocolate in Divas is the real thing, not a faint suggestion but an actual dark, bitter note that cuts through the florals with purpose. The peony keeps it from getting too heavy, adding a softness that tempers the chocolate's edge. Patchouli anchors the whole thing, bringing its characteristic earthiness and a hint of the woodland floor that grounds the composition. Together these notes create something that feels both opulent and wearable, sweet but not saccharine, grounded but far from dull. That's what makes it worth finding today, especially since production stopped.
The evolution
The opening hits fast: pineapple and bergamot arrive together, the citrus doing what citrus does, making everything feel new. Then the florals take over, peony first, orchid trailing behind. That's the first act, and it's the brightest part of the arc. The chocolate doesn't announce itself immediately. It settles in quietly beneath the florals, barely noticeable at first, then increasingly hard to ignore as the top notes begin to fade. The patchouli anchors everything as the heart develops, and the vanilla starts to emerge, warm and quiet, close to the skin. The drydown lasts longer than expected. On fabric, the vanilla and musk hold into the next day.
Cultural impact
Divas by Emanuel Ungaro arrived in 2000. Created by perfumer Max Gavarry for the Emanuel Ungaro house, the fragrance combines dark chocolate and vanilla with a chypre backbone that maintains a couture sensibility. The composition feels bold and assured, its sweet florals and gourmand notes working alongside earthier elements to create something that doesn't shy away from making itself known. It's a fragrance that wears its confidence openly, comfortable in its own skin.
