The top accord is the defining move. Rhubarb as an opening note isn't a safe choice. Its bitter, almost vegetal green is the olfactory equivalent of a conversation starter, it either grabs you or it doesn't. On skin, it arrives sharp, almost astringent, cutting through whatever else is in the room. There's no apology in it. But paired with grapefruit's bright citrus and bergamot's cool clarity, the bitterness softens within minutes into something more legible. What could have been alienating instead becomes the hook.

The evolution

The opening is the test. Rhubarb hits first, sour, bitter, green in a way that makes you pause. Grapefruit sharpens the edge. Bergamot sweetens it, but only just. The citrus settles, and the gin emerges, cool and almost medicinal in the best way, like a bar cart in a clean, well-lit room. Rosemary adds a dry herbal note that keeps the heart from feeling soft. Pine needles bring structure. The transition from citrus to aromatic to woody isn't dramatic. It's a clean handoff. The drydown belongs to birch. Not the sharp birch of a forest in winter, but warm birch, the memory of wood, softened by ambrettolide's skin-musks and ambrox's mineral clarity. On clothes, it lingers close. On skin, it fades to something intimate and clean. The birch remains, faint and warm, like a second skin you actually want to keep.
