The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The original Gem arrived in the 1980s as part of Van Cleef & Arpels' Les Classiques collection, a line that defined what the house smelled like for a generation. It was fruity, it was chypre, it was unapologetically feminine in the way that only heritage houses could manage without apology. Gem 2025 is the maison's attempt to carry that forward. Not recreate it. Carry it forward. The brief, if there was one, seems to have been: keep what worked, update what needed updating, and don't apologize for any of it.
What makes this reinterpretation interesting is the balance. The original Gem was dense, a perfume that announced itself and expected you to adjust. The 2025 version keeps the structure but opens lighter, lets the plum and peach breathe before the florals arrive, and lands the drydown with cedarwood instead of the heavier mosses that made the original feel so thoroughly of its era. It's still chypre. Still tuberose-forward. Still Van Cleef & Arpels. But it wears differently, more like something you'd apply in the morning and forget about until someone leans in close and asks.
The evolution
The opening arrives fast. Peach and plum hit immediately, sweet and slightly tart, with mandarin lifting the whole thing before it can settle. Warm spice sits underneath from the first spray, a subtle aromatic quality that keeps the fruit from smelling like a candle. Ten minutes in, the florals begin their slow takeover. Tuberose first, creamy and slightly animal, followed by ylang-ylang's tropical sweetness. The fruit doesn't disappear. It deepens, becomes almost jammy, as if the peach and plum are cooking down while the florals bloom around them. By the second hour, the florals are fully in command. This is when Gem 2025 becomes itself, lush, warm, slightly powdery from the ylang-ylang, with the fruit still present but subordinate. The drydown takes its time arriving. Cedarwood finally shows up around hour three or four, grounding everything with dry wood and a hint of patchouli.
Cultural impact
Gem 2025 has drawn comparisons to its 1980s predecessor, with reviewers noting it captures the spirit of the original while wearing more lightly. The reception has been divided, some find the old-money elegance exactly what they wanted; others wish it leaned harder into its heritage chypre roots. Either way, it occupies a specific lane: not for everyone, and proud of it.
