The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Bitter orange blossom gave the world neroli, a material so delicate that perfumers approached it with caution for decades. Quentin Bisch disagreed. In 2018, the perfumer reached for that same flower at its most concentrated, orange blossom absolute, and built an entire fragrance around a single gesture: restraint. No bulk. No noise. Just the bitter-floral complexity of neroli, the way it exists in the air above orange groves at dusk. It was the Collection Extraordinaire, that house's most jewel-like range, a collection that treats fragrance materials the same way a master jeweler treats rare stones, with patience and precision until the essential character emerges.
The pyramid is uncluttered by design. Italian lemon, bergamot, mandarin orange, and pink pepper read as one bright chord rather than four separate beats. The heart centers on cypress with its cool green resin bringing gentle coolness, while orange blossom absolute anchors the composition with unexpected weight. Bisch chose the concentrated absolute rather than the essential oil, which gives the floral more bitter depth and a honeyed base that most neroli fragrances skip entirely. The simplicity is the point, this house trusts the material to speak without a supporting cast.
The evolution
The opening offers clean, high citrus. Bright without serrated edges. Mandarin deepens almost imperceptibly, suggesting sweetness that never quite arrives. The heart notes arrive not with fanfare but with gentle coolness, cypress bringing a green woodiness that feels Mediterranean rather than forest. Pink pepper provides a barely-there prickle at the edges. The base announces itself quietly. Orange blossom absolute doesn't project, it exhales. Close enough to catch, impossible to ignore. The drydown reads as clean skin slightly warmed rather than a distinct second fragrance. There's no skatole, no animalic whiplash. Just orange blossom doing exactly what orange blossom does at its most refined, the concentrated absolute lending a honeyed, slightly resinous quality that evolves beautifully on the skin.
Cultural impact
Part of the Collection Extraordinaire range, Néroli Amara speaks to those who find most nerolis too indolic or too heavy. Wearers return to it as their daily scent precisely because it resists performance anxiety, it doesn't compete for space, and that makes it easy to wear every day. The concentrated orange blossom absolute brings refinement without excess, offering the bitter-floral signature of neroli in its most elegant form.
