The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Van Cleef & Arpels built its Collection Extraordinaire around the premise that fragrance can be precious. Founded at Place Vendome in 1906 as a haute joaillerie house, the brand treats scent as jewelry, meant to be worn and treasured. Perfumer Quentin Bisch, working with Interparfums, approached Ambre Imperial with the understanding that amber could be both universal and irreplaceable, something warm yet never loud.
The choice of benzoin and tonka bean alongside amber reflects a philosophy of layered warmth rather than singular intensity. Benzoin provides the resinous anchor, cinnamon adds complexity, and tonka bean smooths everything into a cohesive finish. The bergamot and pink pepper opening ensures the fragrance never becomes heavy, maintaining the restraint that defines the Collection Extraordinaire line.
The evolution
The journey begins with bergamot and pink pepper, a surprisingly airy opening for an amber-focused fragrance. As the top notes fade, benzoin and cinnamon take over, introducing a spiced, resinous quality that deepens the composition into something more intimate. By the time the drydown arrives, amber and tonka bean have transformed the scent into a golden, creamy warmth that lingers on skin for hours, completing an arc that moves from brightness to depth to pure comfort.
Cultural impact
Community ratings reflect a fragrance that works: 7.8 for scent quality, 7.1 for longevity. The moderate sillage and powdery warmth make it versatile across settings, from casual daytime wear to more composed evening occasions. The vanilla-tonka sweetness sits forward in the composition, giving the fragrance its distinctive character, while underlying amber and resinous notes add depth that prevents it from becoming simplistic. Some wearers find this forward sweetness exactly what they wanted in a warm amber; others prefer a more restrained interpretation.
