The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Pascal Giraux designed Van Cleef in 1993. He reached for florals, jasmine, rose, orange blossom, but anchored them in something unexpected: green, aromatic, almost bitter. The galbanum and marigold opening creates a distinctive entry, sharp and vegetal, unlike more conventional floral openings of the period. The composition balances its bright and darker elements carefully, allowing the florals to breathe without becoming too soft or predictable. As the fragrance develops, the warmth of tonka and vanilla becomes apparent, settling close to the skin and providing a gentle counterpoint to the initial green notes. The interplay between these elements creates a fragrance that shifts across its wear, revealing new facets while maintaining a cohesive character throughout.
The composition opens with aromatic green notes that are sharp and vegetal, before transitioning into white florals that provide elegant contrast. The marigold adds a herbal, slightly bitter quality that sets this fragrance apart. Combined with galbanum's green intensity, the top creates a bold opening that evolves as the wearer moves through the day. The florals emerge more prominently in the heart, with jasmine and rose offering creamy and petal-like qualities. The base introduces tonka, vanilla, sandalwood, and cedar, settling into something soft and warm.
The evolution
The opening hits quickly. Bergamot and galbanum arrive together, the bergamot bright and citrusy, the galbanum green and almost bitter. Marigold adds a herbal edge that creates complexity in the top notes. This phase develops before the neroli and raspberry begin to soften things. The heart phase introduces jasmine and rose, adding floral dimension alongside the green foundation. Orange blossom keeps things clean. The transition to drydown brings the tonka and vanilla forward, sweet and warm, followed by sandalwood and cedar bringing cream and wood. The musk adds depth. The sillage starts strong and settles over time. The next day, there's a faint sweetness on the wrist, vanilla and wood.
Cultural impact
Van Cleef arrived without a celebrity face, offering a composition with a distinct character. It has developed a following among those who appreciate its balance of green and floral notes with warm drydown. The fragrance has remained part of the house collection, continuing to attract wearers drawn to its unique combination of aromatic freshness and oriental warmth.
