Why it exists.
The beginning
Ichigo Ichie draws its name from a Japanese expression meaning one time, one meeting, a reminder that every encounter is unrepeatable. Toskovat' perfumer David-Lev Jipa Slivinschi built the 2023 composition around that idea of a singular moment held in scent. The official note list opens with buntan, hibiscus, nashi pear, ume fruit, and sakura, a bright, slightly edible top register built from citrus peel, floral water, and the starchy sweetness of pear. As the hours pass, that opening fruit recedes and the composition settles into a quieter middle band where hydrangea, tiger lily, black tea, and oshiroi powder carry the air.
What makes Ichigo Ichie structurally interesting is the collision between soft and steamy. Cream soda and nashi pear bring a synthetic-sweet fizz, while oshiroi powder and steam sit beside orris root in the heart, a powdery, humid hush that grounds the fruitiness. Hibiscus adds tartness that keeps the sakura from reading purely pretty. The base then shifts unexpectedly, hinoki cypress and sequoia giving a dry, almost incense-like woodiness, with frankincense and amber softening the edges. It's a Japanese-festival palette filtered through a memory that's half sweet, half gone.
The evolution
The opening can feel loud for a soft fragrance. Cream soda and ume fizz up alongside cherry blossom, giving a slightly synthetic candied quality that can read as plastic on paper but warmer in practice, more like the foamy head of a freshly poured soda than anything artificial. That sweetness recedes faster than you might expect. As the early bloom passes, water lily, black tea, and orris take over, cooler, more mineral, with a powdery hush that some wearers describe as steamy and others find too restrained. Tiger lily and hydrangea linger here, lending a green-soapy edge that keeps the floral heart from tipping into pure cosmetics. Later in the wear, the composition pivots hard toward wood. Hinoki cypress and sequoia lead, with frankincense and amber underneath, the incense curling up like smoke caught in late afternoon light.
Cultural impact
Ichigo Ichie sits within Toskovat's Eau de Mémoire collection, a series whose releases tend to be read in terms of atmosphere rather than note-by-note technique. Wearers describe it in pictures: a Japanese summer afternoon, a specific person, a festival at dusk, the kind of images that arrive unbidden when the scent catches them off guard. The unusual cream soda and oshiroi pairing gives the fragrance a distinctive signature, an accord that doesn't translate easily into the usual gourmand or floral shorthand.
