The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The name is the letter: Я. The loneliness of the first person singular. David-Lev built Я around an idea that resists easy translation, toска, a longing without a clear object, an ache that knows its name but not its cause. Champagne opens the composition with the warmth of something about to be lost. Tropical fruit follows: lychee, mango, grapes, the sweetness of a memory that hasn't faded yet. The heart is powdery and warm: iris, heliotrope, gardenia, carnation. Nutmeg threads through, keeping the cream honest. This is where the tension lives: champagne effervescence meeting powder softness, the bright and the intimate in the same breath. The intention isn't to comfort. It's to capture a specific kind of feeling, the one that arrives just before you realize you miss something you can't name.
The base is where this gets interesting. Sand and suede don't typically anchor a composition this sweet. Sand usually lives in orientals, atmospheric scents, somewhere between mineral and warm. Here it does something unexpected: it grounds the powder without killing the sweetness, bridges the gap between nostalgia and something with actual weight. Suede provides the structure, holding everything together as the fruit fades and the powder settles. Vanilla and tolu balsam bring resinous warmth that complements the composition, their presence adding depth without dominating.
The evolution
The opening is immediate: champagne bubbles and tropical fruit, lychee, mango, a whisper of grapes, fizzing bright on skin. The sweetness doesn't wait. It arrives confident, almost challenging. As the initial burst settles, the powder steps in. Iris and heliotrope soften what came before, turning the fizz into something that breathes rather than pops. The transition carries its own surprise, you expect one thing, you get another. The heart develops with carnation and gardenia layering warmth, nutmeg keeping the florals grounded, the powder getting dustier as the champagne recedes. The suede takes over the work of holding everything together. Sand underneath provides warmth and mineral character, the kind of base note that makes everything before it feel earned. Vanilla adds its signature richness, creating a lingering warmth that doesn't smother.
Cultural impact
Released in 2022, Я represents a shift in how fragrance is understood: not as accessory or status marker but as emotional language. The scent draws from personal introspection, exploring the tension between self-perception and outward expression. Rather than leading with ingredient hierarchies or market positioning, the composition prioritizes coherence and feeling. This approach speaks to those who seek fragrance as a form of communication, a way of conveying something that resists easy articulation.
