The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Toskovat' emerged from Romania in 2022 as a project in olfactory archaeology, founded by self-taught perfumer David-Lev Jipa-Slivinschi. Rather than following conventional fragrance construction, Jipa-Slivinschi works from personal recollection, building scents that function as sensory archives. Born Screaming represents the chaotic energy of early memory, constructed from notes that evoke both comfort and discomfort in equal measure.
The notes in Born Screaming were chosen not for their harmony but for their emotional accuracy. Cherry represents the sweetness of early memory, Plastic the artificial constructs we build around experience, and Smoke the passage of time that darkens everything. The inclusion of animalic notes like Castoreum and Ambrette Seed grounds the fragrance in something primal, while floral elements like Heliotropin and Freesia soften the edges. This fragrance asks you to confront what you remember versus what you wish you remembered.
The evolution
Born Screaming begins as an assault of sweet and synthetic, Cherry and Blackberry colliding with Latex and Plastic in an opening that feels like stepping into a childhood memory rendered through distortion. The fruit notes don't wait politely to introduce themselves; they burst forward with urgency, accompanied by the papery tang of Cape gooseberry. As the initial intensity settles, the heart reveals Heliotropin's almond-like sweetness blending with Boronia's complex floral-fruity character. Angel's Trumpet adds a heady, slightly dangerous floral quality while Smoke weaves through, grounding the sweetness in atmospheric haze. The transition into the drydown feels like watching fog lift from a memory, revealing deeper layers of warmth. Freesia persists alongside animalic notes from Ambrette Seed and Castoreum, while Cabreuva Wood and Myrrh provide resinous sweetness. Patchouli and Styrax anchor everything in earthy-balsamic depth, with Pearl leaving an almost imperceptible iridescent trace on skin.
Cultural impact
Born Screaming has become one of Toskovat's most discussed creations, the collision of synthetic cherry with animalic and body imagery creates genuine friction. In a niche fragrance landscape hungry for compositions that refuse to be polite, this one lands. The confrontational naming, the self-taught backstory, the refusal to make anything safe, it all feeds the conversation. For a house barely two years old, the engagement speaks to something real.
