The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Eau du Soir began as a private scent that eventually found its way to a wider audience. The 2010 edition arrived as a collector's homage: a limited run of 7000 pieces in flacons that responded to Anish Kapoor's exhibition at London's Royal Academy of Arts, black and white and covered in scattered spots. The notes stayed exactly as they were in the original composition, preserving the balance that made the scent worth commemorating. Some compositions don't need updating.
What makes this structure interesting is the density of the heart. Twelve ingredients, iris, jasmine, rose, carnation, lily of the valley, ylang-ylang, juniper, pepper, patchouli, syringa, labdanum, and oakmoss, layer without muddying. The citrus opens clean, the florals arrive gradually, and the oakmoss anchors the whole thing into something mossy and alive. French labdanum adds a resinous warmth that distinguishes this from lighter chypres. The result is a pyramid that respects its classical roots while offering enough complexity to reward patience.
The evolution
The opening hits bright: mandarin and grapefruit, sharp and clean. Thirty minutes in, the florals begin their slow arrival, jasmine first, then rose softening the edges, iris adding its characteristic powder. The oakmoss announces itself around the transition, that earthy, slightly animalic depth that defines the chypre family. By hour two, the heart has fully opened: twelve ingredients working in concert, florals and spices and something green underneath. The drydown is where this edition earns its reputation. Patchouli and amber settle close to the skin, musk tracing its warmth upward. The next morning: a faint amber-musk residue, intimate, impossible to mistake for anything else.
Cultural impact
The 2010 limited edition arrived as a collector's statement: 7000 pieces in flacons inspired by Anish Kapoor's exhibition at London's Royal Academy of Arts. Sisley's acknowledgment that Eau du Soir had earned its place as a house signature worth commemorating. The scent had built a following over the years, becoming a quiet classic before this edition arrived. This edition honored that legacy without revision.
