The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Alberto Morillas created Eau de Lotus Bleu for Roger & Gallet. The name says it plainly, Bleu, not the flower itself, but the color of water at a particular hour. Still. Reflective. Before the day gets loud. The composition opens bright with citrus, settling into white florals, anchoring everything with a warm base that keeps the scent close to the skin rather than projecting it outward. The blue lotus at the heart is the quiet center of the whole thing. Not loud. Not trying to prove anything. Just there, holding the composition together. The citrus brings an immediate clarity, a sharpness that feels like morning light hitting a still surface before the world fully wakes.
What makes this composition interesting is its restraint. The blue lotus note is unusual, offering a delicate, almost spiritual quality that does not demand attention. Morillas paired it with orange blossom and rose in the heart, creating a white floral core that stays soft and sunlit rather than heavy or indolic. The base features sandalwood, patchouli, vanilla, and a whisper of incense, giving the scent its warmth and skin-like quality. The fragrance opens with bright citrus that feels crisp and immediate.
The evolution
On skin, the fragrance opens with a bright citrus burst, bergamot, orange, mandarin, and neroli arriving together in a crisp, clean wave. The opening feels sharp and lively, a burst of citrus that immediately captures attention. As the initial minutes pass, the white florals begin to emerge, gradually taking over from the citrus. The orange blossom becomes apparent next, bringing its characteristic sweet, slightly heady floral quality, followed by the blue lotus, which adds a quiet aquatic quality that slows everything down. The rose is present here, woven through the heart to add softness. By the time the heart fully settles, the citrus has faded and the composition is dominated by the white floral core, with lotus, orange blossom, and rose intertwined. The sandalwood base begins to make its presence known, providing warmth and grounding the florals.
Cultural impact
Eau de Lotus Bleu offers something restrained in the realm of aquatic florals. The blue lotus note gives it a point of interest that sets it apart from standard aquatic compositions. The fragrance presents a clean, fresh quality that appeals to those seeking a more composed take on aquatic fragrance. It delivers a serene, contemplative character, inviting the wearer into a quiet space of reflection rather than demanding attention from the surrounding environment. The composition reflects a thoughtful approach to fragrance making, where restraint is valued and subtlety is achieved without sacrificing depth or interest.
