The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Vincent Schaller built Ascendant for Oriflame in 2007 with a clear intent: a robust oriental that could work for everyday men, not just special occasions. The brief centered on cardamom, that warm, slightly resinous spice, as the fragrance's backbone. Schaller layered it with fresh citrus and aromatic herbs, then anchored everything in vanilla and cedar. The result sits at the intersection of approachable and assertive, built for the man who wants presence without performance. Oriflame's Scandinavian roots show in the restraint, confident, but never shouting.
What makes the structure interesting is how Schaller balanced the opposing forces in the pyramid. The top pulls bright and sharp, bergamot, mandarin, grapefruit, a whisper of fennel. The heart brings herbal weight through lavender and rosemary. Then the base softens everything with vanilla and tonka bean, with cedar and vetiver underneath to keep it grounded. The tension between citrus-spice freshness and warm vanilla is what gives Ascendant its range.
The evolution
The opening announces itself immediately, bergamot and mandarin orange cutting through with grapefruit's tart edge. Black cardamom and ginger arrive within the first minutes, adding warmth that starts to push back against the citrus brightness. The herbs take over soon after, lavender and rosemary shifting the composition from sharp to aromatic, with artemisia adding a faintly medicinal quality that keeps things interesting. The citrus doesn't disappear, it fades, becoming a background hum rather than the lead. The drydown begins in earnest as vanilla and tonka bean arrive together, sweet and soft, while cedar and vetiver form the structural base. Cypress adds a faint resinous edge that echoes the cardamom from the opening.
Cultural impact
Ascendant was created by Vincent Schaller, a trained perfumer, for Oriflame's fragrance collection. The fragrance reflects the brand's Scandinavian design ethos, confident but restrained, quality without exclusivity. Schaller crafted the scent with a clear vision: an aromatic profile that blends bright citrus and spice with warm, woody depth. The result is a fragrance that feels complete, present enough to be noticed but restrained enough for regular wear. Those familiar with it tend to return to it.
