The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
.Oddity treats fragrance as an artistic medium, translating abstract concepts into concrete sensory experiences. For Delulu, the brand started with a feeling rather than a perfume tradition. Delulu, the word itself, describes a unit of delusional happiness, a sensation so good you know it cannot be real but you hold onto it anyway. This concept became the brief: a fragrance that captures the headiness of believing in something wonderful, even when that belief defies logic. Perfumer David Chieze worked from this emotional foundation, building a scent structure that moves from sharp, clear optimism through richer, more complex territory before settling into a warmth that feels like holding onto that feeling just a little longer. The result is a fragrance that mirrors the arc of a fleeting good mood, its progression deliberate and its emotional resonance intentional.
Each note in Delulu serves a specific function in the emotional architecture. The rhubarb-citrus opening mirrors the sharp, clear feeling of a good mood arriving suddenly. The fruity heart, particularly the blackcurrant and strawberry jam combination, represents the warmth of immersion in that feeling, the moment when you stop questioning and simply accept. Frankincense adds the necessary complexity that prevents the sweetness from becoming naive. The base notes, with their musky warmth and creamy sandalwood, reflect the lingering quality of happiness that refuses to fully dissipate.
The evolution
TheDelulu arc begins with rhubarb and citrus, a tart-fresh opening that feels like sudden clarity. This is the moment of realization, that spike of happiness when something shifts. Citron and bergamot amplify the brightness while mandarin orange adds a sugary lift that keeps the opening from becoming bitter. As the fragrance moves into its heart phase, the tartness gives way to something warmer and more complex. Blackcurrant arrives with its dark, slightly tart berry character, quickly joined by strawberry jam's jammy sweetness. The effect is fruity and comforting, like a preserve holding its shape against time. Raspberry adds translucent freshness to keep the jam from becoming heavy, while rose whispers through without overwhelming. The frankincense appears here, its resinous presence acting as a counterweight to the sweetness, suggesting that delusional happiness requires a touch of smoke and mystery to feel real. The drydown is where Delulu settles into its final truth. Musk wraps around the skin with a clean, intimate warmth.
Cultural impact
Oddity operates outside the typical niche fragrance playbook. Delulu arrives as an expression of the brand's ongoing investigation into memory and sensation. The sour-fruity character offers something different: bright without being generic, sweet without being naive. What sets it apart is the deliberate tartness that grounds the sweetness in something more complex. Those who connect with the nostalgic character find it transportive; those expecting conventional fruity find it challenging. That's the mark of something with a point of view.
