The Story
Why it exists.
Louise Turner received a brief from Ex Nihilo that posed a simple question: what happens when rose stops being decorative and starts being generative? The house believes perfumers should function as artists with full creative autonomy, and Turner approached this assignment by refusing the obvious path. Rather than treating rose as delicate or romantic, she built Spiky Muse around the flower as an active force. Strawberry and pistachio became her tools for reimagining what rose can do when given freedom to be something other than beautiful.

The Beginning
Louise Turner received a brief from Ex Nihilo that posed a simple question: what happens when rose stops being decorative and starts being generative? The house believes perfumers should function as artists with full creative autonomy, and Turner approached this assignment by refusing the obvious path. Rather than treating rose as delicate or romantic, she built Spiky Muse around the flower as an active force. Strawberry and pistachio became her tools for reimagining what rose can do when given freedom to be something other than beautiful.
The pairing of strawberry with rose might seem unusual, but Turner uses strawberry's tartness to cut through rose's natural sweetness. Pistachio serves a different purpose: it adds body without adding softness. In the base, akigalawood functions as a contemporary wood note that carries more warmth than traditional cedar while maintaining structure. Ambroxan contributes a skin-like quality that makes the drydown feel intimate rather than projecting. This approach to composition treats each note as a functional element rather than decoration, which aligns with Ex Nihilo's philosophy of treating perfumers as artists working without conventional constraints.
The Evolution
The fragrance begins with bergamot and strawberry meeting on skin, their brightness interrupted by pink pepper's subtle heat. This opening does not announce itself as floral; it arrives as something sharper, more playful. As the composition moves into its heart phase, rose emerges as the dominant presence, but it carries a different quality than rose typically presents. Pistachio threads through the floral, adding creaminess and a faint nutty sweetness that keeps the rose from ever becoming precious. By the time the drydown arrives, akigalawood and cedarwood have taken over, their woody character softened slightly by ambroxan's clarity and tonka bean's gentle warmth. The entire arc moves from bright immediacy through textured heart to quiet persistence.
Cultural Impact
Spiky Muse brings something specific to the rose-fruity space: a combination of tart strawberry, warm rose, and smoky Akigalawood that reads modern without abandoning what rose has always done well. Louise Turner's creative freedom at Ex Nihilo produced a feminine fragrance with genuine character, balancing charm with an edge that invites closer attention.

Spiky Muse sounds like a late afternoon that refuses to end gracefully. Bergamot and pink pepper crackle like something electric about to trip. Strawberry arrives tart and immediate, then fades into something warmer as rose and pistachio settle. The drydown hums low, woody and close, the sound of skin after the sun goes down.
