A house, in its own words
Ex Nihilo was born in Paris not from a long lineage of perfumers, but from the vision of three friends: Sylvie Loday, Olivier Royère, and Benoît Verdier. They came from worlds outside of fragrance, sharing a passion for scent and a frustration with the predictable luxury market. In 2013, they decided to create 'out of nothing,' which is what their Latin name means, opening their first boutique at 352 Rue Saint-Honoré as a statement of intent. They weren't just opening a shop; they were launching a challenge to the old guard of French perfume. The house quickly gained a cult following, especially after the release of Fleur Narcotique in 2014. This single fragrance, a hyper-modern floral overdose created by perfumer Quentin Bisch, became a global phenomenon and cemented Ex Nihilo's reputation as a purveyor of uniquely compelling scents. Their growth has been deliberate, choosing prestigious retail partners worldwide like Bergdorf Goodman and Harrods who share their vision for a new kind of luxury.
The core philosophy of Ex Nihilo is absolute creative freedom. The founders give their chosen perfumers a simple but powerful directive: create the scent you've always dreamed of, with no budgetary or creative constraints. This approach treats perfumers like artists, not just technicians. The house views perfume as a vanguard art form, meant to be both disruptive and beautiful. They stand for a French sophistication that's forward-looking, not stuck in the past, blending the best of traditional know-how with a sharp, contemporary edge.
