The Story
Why it exists.
Chandigarh Express is named after the city that shouldn't exist. In the mid-fifties, on the foothills of the Himalayan foothills, in the Sivalik range north of India, visionary architects attempted something unprecedented: building a modernist utopia from scratch in a tropical jungle. Chandigarh became a union between India and France, designed by Le Corbusier and his collaborators, conceived as a radical departure from everything that came before. Ex Nihilo's Gaël Montero channels that same spirit of creation ex nihilo, building a fragrance from leather and cardamom, jungle and modernity, into something that shouldn't exist yet somehow does.

The Beginning
The materials seem like they shouldn't work together. Cardamom and mandarin orange open bright, almost playful. Leather arrives like it belongs to a different fragrance entirely, smoky, assertive, almost rude. Then jasmine and fir balsam bridge the gap, green and floral against the leather's weight. The tonka, benzoin, and patchouli don't so much arrive as settle, warming everything into a drydown that makes sense only in retrospect. It's the leather-tobacco drydown that keeps people coming back, a smoky sweetness that most fragrances in this category never achieve.
The Evolution
The first spray is immediate. Cardamom hits sharp, citrus brightens it, and there's something green underneath, the fir balsam announcing itself before you've had time to prepare. The opening lasts about 20 minutes before the leather takes over, not replacing the citrus so much as folding it into itself. Jasmine arrives next, sweet and slightly indolic, keeping the leather from becoming too austere. By the second hour, the tonka and benzoin are doing the real work, a warm, slightly sweet balsamic that wraps around everything that came before. The vetiver and patchouli anchor it into something that stays close to the skin but refuses to disappear. Eight to ten hours on most people. The sillage starts strong, almost confrontational, then settles into something more intimate, the kind of fragrance someone notices when you've already left the room.
Cultural Impact
Chandigarh Express has developed a loyal following since its 2024 launch, with wearers consistently praising the smoky leather-tobacco drydown as the defining element. Community ratings reflect strong performance across longevity and sillage, the 8-10 hour duration and substantial projection match the experience most people report. The fragrance occupies a specific space: modern enough to feel contemporary, rooted enough in leather and spice to feel substantial. Compared to peers like Tom Ford Ombré Leather and Atkinsons Born for Eternity, Chandigarh Express distinguishes itself through its aromatic opening and more pronounced smoky drydown.

Chandigarh Express sounds like the hour after arrival, when the heat has settled into your skin and the city hums below. A warm, slightly smoky bass line anchors everything, while bright citrus and cardamom create moments of sharpness. The leather note is the percussion: insistent, unexpected, impossible to ignore. It builds toward a warm, sweet finish that feels like the end of a long evening, still warm, still present.
