The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Haltane arrived in 2021 as Parfums de Marly's invitation to the oud-curious. Exclusive to Harrods at launch, general release followed the next year. The name ties into the house's Thoroughbreds collection, a lineage of fragrances named for horses that embodied grace under pressure. Jordi Fernández built Haltane as a bridge: taking the richness that oud lovers crave and wrapping it in warmth that newcomers can wear without hesitation. It's a gateway fragrance in the best sense, not a compromise, but a different entry point into the same territory.
What makes Haltane work is the deliberate sweetness. Saffron brings its precious, slightly medicinal spice. Praline adds an almost edible warmth. Together they soften the resinous edges that can make oud feel aggressive. This isn't oud as a statement. It's oud as an invitation, complex enough to reward attention, gentle enough to wear on a Tuesday without occasion. The composition threads a needle: accessible without being safe, bold without being loud. That balance is harder to achieve than pure intensity, and it's what keeps people reaching for this bottle long after the novelty of heavier oud fragrances fades.
The evolution
The opening announces itself quickly. Bergamot and clary sage arrive bright, clean, almost brisk, this is the herbal freshness doing its work before anything else steps in. Within minutes the praline begins to bloom, turning the composition warmer and sweeter. The saffron follows, threading its spicy thread through the sweetness without ever becoming medicinal. By the third hour, the oud has settled into the base, working alongside cedar to create a woody foundation that breathes rather than overwhelms. What remains at eight hours is a skin-close warmth, the ghost of sweetness, the memory of wood, something that feels worn-in rather than applied.
Cultural impact
Haltane occupies an interesting position: it's become the gateway recommendation for anyone curious about oud but hesitant about its reputation. The fragrance community often cites it alongside Initio Oud for Greatness as an entry point into the note family, though wearers note Haltane skews sweeter and more approachable. The Harrods exclusivity at launch reinforced its positioning as something slightly more curated than a typical mass-market release.
