The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
In 2024 perfumer Jordi Fernández took inspiration from the adrenaline rush pilots feel when the needle climbs and the world blurs. Working with Ex Nihilo's unrestricted creative framework, he set out to capture the specific sensation of speed rather than just the aesthetics of racing. The challenge was to translate kinetic energy into liquid form, using bergamot and ginger as the initial acceleration, then building through resinous warmth to an earthy, enduring trail that feels like the long stretch of an empty highway at midnight.
The note selection reflects a philosophy that speed is not just about acceleration but about control and sensation. Bergamot provides the initial burst of energy, ginger adds the heat that makes the heart race, and sage brings the clarity that comes from focus. Labdanum represents the warmth that builds in an enclosed space at speed, while blackcurrant adds the tension of risk. The base notes of patchouli and vetiver ground the experience in earthiness, preventing the fragrance from becoming abstract. Tonka bean offers the sweetness that reminds you why you chose to drive fast in the first place.
The evolution
The fragrance begins with bergamot and ginger, a combination that creates immediate intensity without aggression. Pink pepper adds a sparkling element while sage introduces an unexpected herbal note that distinguishes this from typical spicy fragrances. As the top notes fade, labdanum and blackcurrant emerge to create what Fernández describes as the core memory of speed, a moment where everything clicks into place and momentum takes over. The drydown with patchouli, amberwood, tonka bean, and vetiver provides the gravitational pull that keeps the fragrance grounded even as it maintains its electric character. This evolution from sharp citrus through smoky fruit to earthy warmth mirrors the experience of reaching cruising speed.
Cultural impact
Since its 2024 debut, Night Drive has become a cult favourite among motorsport fans and scent hunters who crave a fragrance that feels like a midnight race. The limited‑edition Visionnaire collection, created with photographer Riocam, sparked buzz on social media, with wearers sharing videos of the scent’s ‘engine‑start’ opening. Its bold, aromatic‑spicy profile positions it alongside other high‑energy Ex Nihilo releases, reinforcing the house’s reputation for daring, modern compositions.
