The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Ex Nihilo operates from a philosophy of radical creative freedom, founded by three friends who rejected the conventions of heritage perfume houses. When perfumer Nadège Le Garlantez approached Vesper Glitz, she had no budget constraints and no marketing mandates, only the directive to create something that pushed past what was expected. The brief was simple: capture the feeling of Paris at night, that electric moment when the city transforms and every possibility feels within reach. The result is a fragrance that wears its sophistication lightly, designed for moments of deliberate glamour rather than quiet elegance.
The choice of neroli and mandarin orange for the opening reflects a philosophy of controlled brightness: these notes are familiar, almost nostalgic, but the addition of pink pepper prevents them from becoming safe. Similarly, the heart uses jasmine and ylang-ylang, classic floral materials, but pairs them with mimosa to create something that reads as both familiar and slightly off-balance. The drydown embraces warmth without irony, using tonka bean and vanilla in a way that acknowledges their sweetness rather than apologizing for it. Vesper Glitz pairs beautifully with evening wear in soft fabrics, or with the particular confidence that emerges when someone knows they are the best-dressed person in the room.
The evolution
The fragrance begins with a burst of solar energy, neroli and mandarin orange immediately commanding attention while pink pepper adds an unexpected sparkle. This opening is designed to make an entrance, to announce arrival before a word is spoken. The heart unfolds gradually, ylang-ylang and jasmine releasing their exotic warmth as the initial brightness begins to soften. Mimosa weaves through the floral middle, adding a powdery softness that prevents the composition from becoming too heavy. By the time the drydown arrives, the fragrance has transformed from sharp to enveloping, musk and vanilla creating an intimate aura that lingers for hours. Cedarwood provides the final structural note, ensuring the sweetness remains grounded and the wearer remains memorable long after leaving the room.
Cultural impact
Vesper Glitz sits in the tradition of Ex Nihilo's Les Interdites collection, fragrances designed to provoke, to invite, to challenge expectations of what luxury perfume can be. The yellow floral genre has seen a surge in recent years, with Libre by YSL and Paradoxe by Prada leading mainstream visibility, but Vesper Glitz takes a different angle: less confrontational, more intimate. It's for the person who wants the quality of niche without the announcement. The 2023 launch placed it in a market that had grown saturated with loud florals, what it offered instead was restraint, creaminess, the promise of something that stays close. That positioning has resonated with a specific audience: those who want presence without projection, luxury without loudness.
