The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Dries Van Noten, founded in Antwerp in 1986, has long treated fragrance as an extension of fabric and form. Partnering with Puig in 2022, the house released Soie Malaquais as its first independent scent, named for the Quai Malaquais gallery where its beauty collection resides. The name honors the silk weaving heritage embedded in the brand's identity, connecting scent directly to the tactile luxury of the runway. Marie Salamagne crafted the fragrance with this lineage in mind, building a composition that mirrors the sensation of silk against skin.
The note selection reflects a deliberate philosophy: contrast as elegance. Blackcurrant and bergamot provide initial energy, rose and silk create refined beauty, and chestnut, cocoa, and vanilla deliver warm comfort. Each layer serves a purpose, building a scent that moves through the day with shifting character. The pairing of silk with rose reinforces the brand's textile heritage, while the edible drydown grounds the composition in something approachable and personal.
The evolution
The fragrance begins with blackcurrant and bergamot, a pairing that feels both contemporary and timeless. The blackcurrant delivers a tart, fruity brightness that immediately captures attention, while bergamot adds citrusy lift that keeps the opening airier than a typical fruit scent. As the minutes pass, rose emerges as the dominant heart note, softened by a silk accord that adds smooth, cool refinement. The transition feels natural, the fruitiness giving way to something more intimate and feminine. The drydown marks the true character of Soie Malaquais. Chestnut leads, bringing roasted warmth that feels autumnal and grounded. Cocoa follows with its bitter-sweet depth, adding an edible complexity that prevents the scent from becoming merely sweet. Vanilla closes the composition, wrapping everything in creamy softness that clings close to the skin for hours.
Cultural impact
The Art of Contrast collection, with Soie Malaquais at its core, quickly became a talk‑point among fragrance enthusiasts for its daring blend of silk‑soft florals and gourmand warmth. Wearers note its adult, pulled‑tog ether vibe, describing it as the scent of someone who walks into a room confident yet understated. Its balanced sillage and long‑lasting drydown have earned it a spot on many winter‑to‑spring wardrobes, positioning it as a modern classic in unisex niche circles.
