The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
BDK Parfums emerged from David Benedek's lifelong immersion in the perfume world. His grandparents established a perfumery on Rue Saint-Honoré in the 1950s, and Benedek grew up surrounded by the craft. In 2016, he launched BDK Parfums with a philosophy that treats each fragrance as a fully realized character, complete with mood, setting, and personality. This approach rejects the notion of fragrance as mere product in favor of narrative. Mathilde Bijaoui, the perfumer behind Gris Charnel, brings her own perspective to this tradition, crafting a scent that reflects the brand's commitment to storytelling through raw materials.
The note selection in Gris Charnel reflects a deliberate philosophy of contrast and balance. Cardamom and fig might seem an unlikely pairing, but their combination creates an opening that is simultaneously spicy and fresh, setting the stage for the earthy depth of vetiver. Iris bridges the transition from the green, aromatic opening to the creamy base, providing a powdery refinement that prevents the fragrance from becoming too austere. Sandalwood and tonka bean in the drydown represent a classic pairing for warmth and comfort, but Bijaoui's execution keeps them from overwhelming the composition. The result is a fragrance that feels cohesive across its stages, with each note earning its place in the narrative.
The evolution
Gris Charnel opens with cardamom, fig, and black tea, a trio that immediately establishes tension between spice and freshness. The cardamom provides an aromatic lift, while fig introduces a green, slightly sweet dimension that feels both modern and grounded. Black tea anchors the opening with its subtle astringency. As the fragrance evolves, vetiver and iris take over, shifting the character toward earthiness and powdery refinement. Vetiver's smoky, root-like quality provides depth, while iris adds a cool floral note that elevates the composition. The drydown marks a final transformation, with sandalwood and tonka bean creating a warm, creamy finish. Sandalwood's milk-like sweetness blends with tonka bean's soft, vanillic warmth, leaving a lingering trail that feels intimate and sophisticated.
Cultural impact
Gris Charnel has attracted a following among people looking for something beyond the standard releases. The powdery iris and warm tonka drydown give it a character that feels both modern and timeless. It's neither trendy nor outdated, sitting in a different register from the usual crowd-pleasers. The combination of cool and warm notes, sharp cardamom with soft sandalwood, creates a fragrance that asks something of the wearer. For those who want their scent to have actual depth and complexity, this one delivers.
