The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
BDK Parfums was founded in Paris by David Benedek with a vision of olfactory storytelling. Each scent functions as a character within an imaginary library, narratives built around creative autonomy and French craftsmanship. Mathilde Bijaoui created the original Gris Charnel in 2019, crafting a fragrance that explored the tension between warmth and freshness. For the Extrait, released in 2022, Bijaoui returned to amplify the original's signature. The concentration increased to 30%, but more importantly, the structure gained texture through new patchouli presence in the base.
The note selection reflects a philosophy of contrast and complement. Cardamom and fig create an opening that is simultaneously fresh and warm, a deliberate tension. The iris-vetiver-labdanum heart introduces powdery, earthy, and resinous elements that support each other through shared green-woody territory. The drydown's vanilla-sandalwood pairing represents classic warm fragrance construction, elevated by American cedar's dry counterpoint and patchouli's grounding bitterness. This is not a linear progression but a dialogue between aromatic spice, cool floral, and warm woody elements, each phase informing the others.
The evolution
The journey begins with cardamom's immediate spice, quickly joined by fig's characteristic sweetness and black tea's aromatic bitterness. This opening phase lasts approximately fifteen minutes before the heart emerges. Iris tingitana absolute replaces the softer floral notes found in the standard version, bringing its distinctive powdery, violet-like quality. Vetiver and labdanum support this floral heart with earthy and resinous dimensions respectively. As the heart transitions into the drydown, vanilla and tonka bean emerge as the primary sweetness, their gourmand character tempered by sandalwood's creamy wood notes. American cedar adds dry, pencil-shaving clarity while patchouli closes the composition with earthy depth. This arc moves from aromatic spice through cool floral complexity to warm, grounded sweetness.
Cultural impact
Gris Charnel Extrait won Perfume Extraordinaire 2023 from The Fragrance Foundation. The recognition marked a significant moment for the young house, positioning this niche fragrance as a distinctive interpretation that builds on its original inspiration.
