The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Thibaud Crivelli was tasting a citrus cocktail spiced with chilli under a scorching sun when something shifted. The juxtaposition of bright, juicy bergamot with that unexpected heat inspired the creation. Bertrand Duchaufour worked with bergamot as a central element, chili as a lingering presence that doesn't end, rhubarb adding a green-tart edge that keeps everything awake. The name itself, Batikanga, sounds like a rhythm. A pulse. A tropical fever that won't break.
Duchaufour treats bergamot like a material he hasn't met before. He isolates the subtle bitterness, the touch of sharpness. The result is a bergamot that anchors rather than opens. Chili and grapefruit create a heart that reads as heat, not as spice for its own sake. Rhubarb adds that sour-green jolt that makes the composition restless. And fenugreek, that bitter seed, does something quietly unusual in the base, adding dimension without announcing itself. The composition feels alive, constantly shifting, each note holding space for the next to enter.
The evolution
Bergamot and cardamom arrive first, bright, immediate, electric. The cardamom adds warmth that lifts the citrus from clean to something more complex. Within minutes, the handoff begins. Chili and pomelo move in, and the temperature rises. This is the fever phase. The rhubarb amplifies the sour-green tension, keeping everything taut. Two hours in, vetiver takes over, earthy, hazelnut-dark, warm. Myrrh and fenugreek arrive quietly, adding a dry resinous quality that extends the wear. The composition settles into a warm, lasting drydown where vetiver's structure persists while myrrh adds a lingering, resinous presence that stays close to the skin.
Cultural impact
Maison Crivelli occupies a specific space in contemporary perfumery, conceptual enough to intrigue collectors, wearable enough to reach beyond them. Citrus Batikanga's combination of bright citrus with persistent heat and earthy depth makes it distinctive. For those who want a citrus that refuses to be polite, this fragrance offers boldness and complexity.
