The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Papyrus Moleculaire began with a stolen moment. Founder Thibaud Crivelli encountered a group of women smoking cigarillos, discovering papyrus powder in the kind of impromptu scene that rewires perception. The femininity and virility tangled together in that instant became the brief: a gender-free perfume that elevated an unexpected raw material. Papyrus, little-known in Western haute perfumery, became the protagonist. Perfumer Leslie Girard translated that shock into a wearable composition, released in 2020 as part of the Expériences Olfactives collection. The result is a woody powdery spicy blend where papyrus takes center stage, elevated through exceptional raw materials.
Papyrus sits in an unusual position in perfumery, warm, woody, spicy, and smoky at once. But in Papyrus Moleculaire, it reveals something unexpected: the more transparent, powdery, even spicy facets that most people never encounter. Pairing it with tobacco absolute creates a tension that pulls in two directions. One side is powdery softness. The other is rebellious sweetness. Neither overwhelms. The sandalwood and tonka bean support without competing for attention. It's the kind of contrast that makes you lean closer instead of pulling back.
The evolution
Papyrus announces itself immediately, dry, papery, almost mineral in quality. Black pepper and elemi resin provide the spark before coriander adds a green, aromatic lift. This opening is sharp and aromatic, papyrus leading the charge. The heart arrives within the hour. Papyrus takes command while sandalwood and tobacco absolute build beneath it, creating a warm, powdery, resinous quality. The tobacco carries that rebellious, slightly smoky sweetness that the official description promises. By the drydown, several hours in, papyrus softens but doesn't disappear. Tonka bean wraps everything in warm sweetness. Amyris adds a gentle softness. Leather grounds the finish. The result is powdery, warm, intimate, and it stays close to the skin long after you think it's gone.
Cultural impact
Papyrus Moleculaire has carved a niche for itself among those who seek unusual raw materials rendered with elegance. The papyrus note, rare in Western perfumery, makes an immediate impression. The combination of powdery papyrus and rebellious tobacco creates something that sparks conversation without asking for it. The scent stays with you through the day, drawing people in to ask what it is.
