The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Nathalie Lorson composed Suggestion Eau d'Or in 1994 as part of Montana's Suggestion line. The name itself implies something suggested rather than stated, a fragrance that hints at its intentions rather than announcing them. Lorson built Suggestion Eau d'Or around powder and warmth, creating a contrast between green-fresh opening notes and a rich, floral heart anchored by woods. The opening burst of citrus and green notes immediately gives way to a soft, powdery quality that lingers in the top notes, while the heart reveals itself gradually with jasmine and rose notes that feel both creamy and slightly sweet. The woody base provides structure without heaviness, allowing the fragrance to evolve over several hours on the skin.
The structure of Suggestion Eau d'Or relies on a deliberate tension between freshness and warmth. Violet appears twice, as a top note and woven throughout the composition, lending its signature powdery character to multiple phases. Bergamot provides the initial citrus spark, but it's the floral heart that defines the fragrance: jasmine, rose, and orris create a dense floral presence that could easily tip into heaviness. The trick is the base. Cedar and sandalwood provide dry woody structure while musk and vanilla add warmth, with amber giving the golden quality the name promises.
The evolution
The opening announces itself immediately: green accord and bergamot with violet and hyacinth. The green notes feel fresh-cut, stems and spring petals, while bergamot adds a bright citrus sharpness that cuts through the sweetness. Peach brings a soft fruit quality without tipping into syrupy territory. The handoff to the heart happens within minutes as the florals arrive. Jasmine dominates the middle phase, full and indolic, with rose adding depth and orchid bringing an exotic richness. Orris powder becomes more noticeable here, the violet accord intensifying rather than fading. By hour two, the florals begin their slow recession. Cedar emerges first, dry and grounding, followed by sandalwood's creamy warmth. Musk and vanilla weave through the base, but amber is the real protagonist in the final act. It's sweet and golden, but the woody notes keep it from becoming cloying. The drydown is intimate, powdery warmth that lingers close to the skin for hours. On fabric, it can persist until the next day.
Cultural impact
Launched in 1994, Suggestion Eau d'Or entered a fragrance landscape where florals remained popular choices for both designers and niche houses. The composition itself demonstrates how powdery notes can create an intimate, soft impression on the skin. For wearers who appreciate fragrances that feel warm and slightly sweet, this perfume offers a distinctive option within the floral category. The amber and vanilla base notes create a comforting quality that many find appealing, while the violet and floral heart adds complexity.
