The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Sophie Labbé created Mimmina Red in 1995 as part of a three-fragrance expansion: Red, Vanilla, and White Musk. Each named for its elemental character. Red arrived in a deep ruby-tinted bottle, a visual statement before the cap even comes off. The house had built its reputation on accessible, well-crafted scents since 1971, pieces that offered heritage quality without demanding reverence. Red fit that mold perfectly: classical structure, contemporary sensibility, created by a respected nose for a discriminating client before reaching a wider audience.
What makes Red unusual is the way Labbé handled the transition from citrus opening to warm, powdery base. The rosewood-grapefruit-coriander start has genuine character, not the safe, soapy citrus of many contemporaries. The apricot-peach-cinnamon heart reads as warm and golden without becoming confectionery. Then jasmine adds that floral backbone that keeps it from floating away. The combination of powdery iris and warm vanilla in the drydown is what separates this from simpler fruity florals. It's a structure that rewards attention, not just a first impression.
The evolution
The opening is the brightest moment, citrus and rosewood collide with energy that feels almost 90s in its optimism. The coriander presence is immediate, giving the top notes an aromatic warmth that prevents the grapefruit from going too sharp. Within twenty minutes, the apricot arrives and softens everything. The jasmine follows, not to dominate but to support, a quiet floral hand on the fruit's shoulder. The drydown takes its time. Sandalwood and cedar form a creamy, woody base that keeps the fragrance close to the skin. The iris and vanilla don't announce themselves, they emerge slowly, like warmth rising from skin in a quiet room. Lasts four to six hours on most skin types, leaning intimate throughout. The final impression is powdery, warm, and slightly sweet, the kind of drydown that lingers on clothing into the evening.
Cultural impact
The 1995 trio demonstrates Mimmina's range: Red, Vanilla, and White Musk each explored different fragrance territories within a single year. For collectors, the trio serves as a compact introduction to the house's philosophy, familiar notes presented with subtle twists rather than radical reinvention. Red occupies a specific niche within that legacy: warm, powdery, and intimate, with a fruity-woody structure that feels distinctly of its era without becoming dated.
