The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
In 1998, Françoise Caron returned for the house's second fragrance. The debut had been dark, complex, deliberate. MV became its counterpoint. The tropical fruits that arrived, blackcurrant, papaya, passion fruit, yuzu, were not an accident or an afterthought. They were a structural choice, in keeping with the house's philosophy of refined complexity over obvious glamour. The florals that followed arrived clean and precise: freesia, jasmine, peony, orris root holding structure where lesser compositions would dissolve. A base of benzoin, sandalwood, vanilla, cedar, musk anchored what might otherwise have floated away. This was the house's answer to glamour: complexity without declaration.
The tropical fruits here are not sweetness for its own sake. Yuzu's citrus keeps the blackcurrant and papaya from going heavy, a technical decision disguised as a flavor choice. In the heart, orris root acts as an invisible scaffold: powdery, earthy, grounding florals that could otherwise drift. The florals themselves, freesia, jasmine, peony, are chosen for restraint over assertiveness. That is the actual technical achievement: making a fruity floral feel composed rather than chaotic. The benzoin-sandalwood-vanilla in the base creates warmth that stays close rather than projecting, an intimate effect, not a room-filling one.
The evolution
The opening arrives bright and tart: yuzu first, cutting through the tropical sweetness before blackcurrant and papaya settle in. A brief moment of fruit-before-flower, sharp, clean, awake. Within twenty minutes the florals take over. Freesia cools what might have been too sweet. Jasmine arrives richer beneath the surface. The peony keeps things soft without tipping into powder. The sweetness recedes rather than deepening, controlled throughout. The drydown is where benzoin does its quiet work. Warm without announcement. Sandalwood and vanilla beneath. Musk and oakmoss keeping it close. 6-8 hours on most skin, though the projection softens after the first hour. What lingers is not the fruit, it's the warmth underneath.
Cultural impact
MV occupies a particular position in the landscape of fruity florals: restrained where others sprawl, structural where others dissolve. The house's philosophy of refined complexity over obvious declaration gives it a different kind of confidence, one that rewards attention rather than demanding it.
