The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Samphire began as a creative experiment at Laboratory Perfumes in 2013, when perfumer Christopher Perry was handed a freshly plucked verbena leaf and challenged to capture its springtime essence. The result became the third release from this British house, founded in 2011 with a focus on gender-neutral, nature-inspired scents. Rather than replicating the leaf exactly, Perry built outward from that verdant spark, incorporating juniper berry, black pepper, and bright citrus to create an aromatic opening that feels both fresh and grounded. The fragrance reflects the house philosophy of translating simple natural moments into wearable compositions, grounding its initial zest in the green, slightly resinous character of herbs like basil and rosemary.
The note structure of Samphire reflects a deliberate balance between brightness and depth. Perry chose juniper berry and black pepper as anchors for their aromatic, slightly medicinal quality, while bergamot and citrus provide immediate freshness. The heart incorporates basil and ginger to bridge the opening and base, creating a warm herbal character that avoids being too masculine or too sweet. The drydown relies on iris and labdanum for their powdery-resinous quality, supported by white amber to add longevity without heaviness. This layering approach ensures that each phase feels distinct yet cohesive, allowing wearers to experience the full arc of the composition throughout the day.
The evolution
The fragrance opens with a bracing rush of juniper berry and bergamot, their aromatic citrus immediately setting a coastal tone. Black pepper adds a subtle heat that lifts the brighter top notes, while citron, lime, and lemon create a tart, sparkling effect reminiscent of sea spray. As the opening settles, basil and rosemary take center stage in the heart, their herbal depth balancing the initial brightness. Ginger and lemongrass introduce warmth and a hint of spice, while grapefruit and mandarin orange maintain a citrus thread that connects each phase. Lavender softens the transition, adding an aromatic calm before the drydown arrives. The final phase brings iris and oakmoss forward, their powdery, earthy character providing contrast to the earlier zest. Labdanum and jasmine add a floral-resinous richness, while tonka bean and white amber create a warm, lingering finish that feels clean and inviting.
Cultural impact
Since its 2013 debut, Samphire has been embraced by fans of fresh‑green aromatics, often mentioned alongside classics like Eau Sauvage for its crisp marine edge. Its peppery bite gives it personality, making it a favorite for those who want a clean scent that still commands attention without overwhelming sweetness.
