The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The name says everything. Korloff Paris built No Ordinary Man as a statement fragrance, not for the man who blends in, but for the one who arrives on his own terms. Elise Bénat composed this as part of the Voyager Collection, a line dedicated to bold departures. The brief was clear: masculine without the usual playbook, spicy without becoming a caricature, with enough warmth to last long after the room has cleared. What emerged is a fragrance that earns its name at every stage of wear.
The hazelnut-vetiver combination is unusual in men's fragrance, where nuttiness usually means tonka or praline sweetness. Here, hazelnut stays dry, almost roasted, threaded through white violet's powder and myrrh's resinous edge. It adds texture without softness, a material that feels grounded rather than girlish. Star anise, meanwhile, carries the opening with a quiet intensity that fades before you notice it, replaced by leather and patchouli that hold the skin for hours.
The evolution
The first minutes are surprisingly delicate. Yuzu and bergamot arrive clean and bright, the kind of opening that seems polite, almost hesitant. The yuzu's citrusy tartness interplays with bergamot's sweet floral edge, creating a freshness that feels both modern and understated. Then the star anise announces itself. Not loud, but present. A dry, aromatic note that shifts the energy entirely. By the time the heart develops, the citrus is gone and something warmer takes over: hazelnut's roasted depth against white violet's powdery air. Myrrh adds resin without sweetness. The drydown is where No Ordinary Man earns its name. Leather and vetiver build a structure that sits close to the skin but refuses to disappear. Patchouli grounds everything in earthy warmth, and a velvety musk wraps the composition in something soft, almost intimate.
Cultural impact
No Ordinary Man launched as part of Korloff's Voyager Collection, a lineup built for men seeking something beyond the expected. The fragrance pairs the sharp, licorice-like quality of star anise with the warm, resinous depth of leather and vetiver. The Voyager Collection's ethos centers on adventurous compositions for the modern gentleman, and No Ordinary Man embodies that spirit by bringing together contrasting elements that challenge expectations.
