The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Urban Oud launched in 2020 from Habibi NY, a house that has steadily built a reputation for releasing compositions rooted in oud and adjacent materials. Urban Oud sits at a specific crossroads within the brand's lineup: the traditional gravitas of oud, a material carrying centuries of Middle Eastern heritage, interpreted through a contemporary compositional lens. The agarwood here is supported by guaiac wood, patchouli, cedar, vetiver, and vanilla in the base, while the heart layers in iris, saffron, suede, rose, jasmine, papyrus, and carrot, surrounded by a bright top of bergamot, mandarin, cardamom, nutmeg, and pink pepper. The resulting composition reads as restrained rather than resinous, an oud that prioritizes wearability and balance over intensity.
What makes this composition structurally interesting is how it uses oud without letting it dominate. The agarwood sits in the base layer alongside guaiac wood, patchouli, cedar, vetiver, and vanilla, supported by softer materials like light amber and castoreum that cushion the wood accord rather than sharpening it. The heart layer is where the real conversation happens: iris, saffron, suede, rose, jasmine, carrot, papyrus, and wine lees. That combination is unusual.
The evolution
The first thirty minutes are bright and lifted. Bergamot, mandarin, cardamom, nutmeg, and pink pepper arrive together, like stepping out of a cold street into a heated lobby. There is spice, yes, but it reads polished rather than aggressive. The cardamom does most of the early work, giving the opening a warm, slightly sweet aromatic snap, while the pink pepper adds a faint current of brightness that keeps the citrus from feeling flat. Around the ninety-minute mark, the citrus retreats and the heart unfolds. Iris arrives first, powdery and cool, then saffron and suede build underneath in tandem. Wine lees and papyrus add a dry, leathery texture that feels almost like turning pages in an old book, dusty and composed. Rose and jasmine stay restrained, more suggestion than declaration, peeking through the suede rather than competing with it.
Cultural impact
Urban Oud offers a particular reading of agarwood that pulls away from the smoke-and-incense archetype. The composition keeps the wood in dialogue with iris, saffron, suede, papyrus, and wine lees, materials that interrupt oud's typical trajectory rather than amplifying it. That powdery iris-and-suede reading gives the fragrance a quietness that many oud compositions lack, and the wine lees adds an unusual vinous dryness that pushes the heart away from familiar territory.
