The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Dominique Bouley designed Embrace around a single tension: brightness that doesn't stay on the surface. The name is a direct instruction, a fragrance meant to pull someone closer. Released in 2016, it arrives with citrus and basil at the top, then unfolds into florals and woods that feel earned, not performed. The opening bursts with lemon zest and bergamot, crisp and immediate, creating an assertive first impression that refuses to be ignored. As the top notes soften, rose and jasmine emerge to temper the brightness, while black pepper and ylang-ylang add an unexpected spiciness. The drydown settles into oud, leather, sandalwood, and vanilla, a base that lingers without overwhelming. It's a fragrance that rewards patience, revealing new facets as hours pass.
Six citrus materials anchor the opening: lemon zest, bergamot, mandarin, grapefruit, blackcurrant, and basil. The top notes work together to create maximum brightness and invitation, a cascade of citrus that announces itself confidently before transitioning. The heart layers rose and jasmine over black pepper and ylang-ylang, keeping florals present but not powdery. The base of oud, leather, sandalwood, and vanilla is where the fragrance earns its name, a warm foundation that balances the initial brightness.
The evolution
The citrus opens sharp and awake. Lemon zest and bergamot hit first, grapefruit adds weight, and basil keeps things green and slightly herbaceous. Blackcurrant gives the top a dark undertone that prevents it from reading as purely summery. Within thirty minutes, the florals arrive: rose and jasmine soften the citrus, but black pepper and orange blossom keep it from drifting into sweetness. The heart develops complexity as green and herbal notes beneath the florals become more pronounced, creating a sustained mid-section that holds the fragrance's identity together. Then the base takes over. Leather and oud arrive together, dry, animalic, warm, and vanilla sweetens the landing without softening it. Vetiver and patchouli add earth, grounding the composition with a smoky, mineral depth that extends the fragrance's presence on skin.
Cultural impact
Embrace has been discontinued, which has only increased interest in the fragrance among those who seek it out. The combination of bold citrus, warm florals, and animalic oud makes it a niche scent in the truest sense. Its layered construction offers something different at each stage, from the bright opening through the floral heart to the deep, resinous drydown. Collectors and enthusiasts who discovered it have kept it in rotation, drawn to its distinctive character.
